The advantages of a lithium-ion battery compared to conventional lead batteries
• High energy density: more energy in a lighter housing;
• High charging currents (allowing to reduce the charging time);
• High discharge currents (for example for cooking on an electric hob with a small battery bank);
• Long lifespan (up to 6 times the lifespan of a conventional battery);
• High efficiency between charge and discharge (very little energy loss due to the increase in heat);
• More continuous power available.
Why a lithium iron phosphate battery?
Lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO4 or LFP) are the safest traditional batteries. The nominal voltage of a LFP cell is 3.2 V (lead: 2 V / cell). A 25.6 V LFP battery consists of 8 cells in series.
Complete system A complete system is made up of:
• One or more Lithium-ion batteries of 24 V 180 Ah or 100 Ah
• (optional) Lynx Power In, a modular DC bus bar.
• The Lynx Ion + Shunt is a battery management system (BMS) that monitors the batteries. It contains a main safety contactor and a shunt. Two models are available: a 350 A model and a 600 A model (optional). The Lynx Distributor, a DC distribution system with fuses.
• (optional) Ion Control, a digital control panel.
• (optional) The Color Control GX, a more sophisticated digital control panel.
The benefits of Victron's Lithium-Ion Lynx battery system
The following advantages are added to the modular system used:
• The Victron lithium-ion battery system is easy to install due to its modularity. No complicated wiring diagram is required.
• Detailed information is available on the waterproof Ion Control screen.
• The Lynx-Ion + Shunt relay guarantees maximum security: if the chargers or loads do not listen to commands from the Lynx Ion + Shunt, the main safety relay will trip to avoid permanently damaging the batteries.
• For typical marine installations, there is an additional small outlet. You can therefore still power the bilge pump and disconnect all household loads by triggering the main relay.
24 V 180 Ah / 100 Ah Lithium-Ion batteries
The base of the Victron lithium-ion battery system is made up of individual 24 V / 180 Ah batteries. They are equipped with a battery management system (BMS) which protects the battery at the cell level. This system controls individual cell tension and system temperature, and it actively balances individual cells. All measured parameters are sent to Lynx Ion, which checks the entire system.
Lynx Ion + Shunt
The Lynx Ion + Shunt is the BMS. It contains the safety contactor, and it controls the balancing of the cells, the load and the discharge of the system. It also tracks changes in the state of charge of the batteries and calculates the remaining autonomy. It protects the battery pack from overcharging and draining the battery. If a boost is imminent, it will signal the devices whose charge must be reduced or stopped. This is possible thanks to the VE.Can bus (NMEA2000) which is compatible, and also through the two open / closed contacts available. The same applies if the battery is almost empty, and if no charging capacity is available. It will signal important charges to be extinguished. For both supercharging and exhaustion, there is a last resort for safety: the integrated contactor of 350 or 600 A. If the warning does not stop the imminent overeating or exhaustion, the contactor will trip.

Canbus Communication with the outside is done through the VE.Can protocol.
