Simply put, AC-coupled solar battery storage with a hybrid inverter means adding a battery system and a hybrid inverter to a standard photovoltaic installation. It can be used to upgrade an existing solar panel setup or as part of a brand-new installation.
The batteries store the electricity your solar panels produce and would otherwise export to the grid. You can then use this energy at night, during the day, or in case of a power outage. In some setups, AC-coupled systems are designed so that solar panels continue working and charging the batteries even when the power goes out.
An AC-coupled battery system is relatively simple. Your solar panel setup remains unchanged. A qualified installer—or even yourself—can install the batteries and hybrid inverter. Solar energy charges the batteries, which then power the home. Any excess energy is sent to the grid as usual once the batteries are full.
AC-coupled solar battery storage system
1. Solar panels – DC electricity flows through the solar inverter as usual. Other renewable sources (e.g., wind turbines) can also be connected.
2. Solar inverter – Converts DC to AC power, which is then sent to the battery inverter. If the batteries are full, energy is sent to the home or the grid.
3. Meter – Measures all energy used or exported, just like in a standard setup.
4. Hybrid inverter (AC coupling) – Converts incoming AC to DC to charge the batteries, and reconverts DC to AC when power is needed in the home.
5. Batteries – Store energy until required by your household appliances.
AC-coupled battery systems are especially popular among homeowners who already have solar panels and want to optimize their energy usage.

Many AC-coupled battery systems can even charge at night using off-peak electricity, allowing you to use solar power during the evening and recharge the system overnight at a reduced cost.
3kW AC Coupled Storage Inverter – ME-3000SP – SOFAR SOLAR
The Sofar ME3000SP is a bidirectional battery inverter. It can be combined with batteries to serve as a storage upgrade to your existing renewable energy system. It manages energy flow bidirectionally and operates automatically (TOU mode), charging/discharging the battery as needed. In auto mode, the ME3000SP stores excess renewable energy and releases it when solar production is insufficient.
This inverter is compatible with AMASS lithium batteries (up to 10kWh). These can discharge up to 90% daily and come with a 10-year or 6000-cycle warranty.
